ITINERARY

Show All Info

Today depart from Auckland for Casablanca, Morocco! Fly with Etihad Airways, Emirates, Air France, Virgin Australia, or Qatar Airways to name a few (subject to availability).

Meals included: In-Flight

Upon arrival, you will be welcomed at the airport and transferred to the hotel in Rabat (approx. 1 hour).

Overnight: Riad Dar Elkebira or similar, Rabat
Meals included: None

This morning, enjoy a guided tour of Rabat with a local guide. You will take in the medieval fortification of the Chellah Necropolis in the heart of Rabat. Step back in time as you explore Rabat's original city centre and enter through the grand door of the Kasbah des Oudaias. Mostly a residential area today, take the opportunity to quietly wander the peaceful white and blue-washed streets.

From there, you’ll visit the 20th-century Andalusian Gardens - a serene space away from the crowds. You will also discover the Hassan Tower, a minaret of the incomplete mosque and Mausoleum of Mohamed V - a 12th-century project which was abandoned. All that remains today is the red sandstone tower standing at 145ft (44m).

Afterwards, enjoy the scenic drive to Chefchaouen. Admire the changing scenery as the flat plains and hills transform into the rugged landscape of the Rif Mountains. Chefchaouen translates in English to ‘two horns’ and is named for the two peaks rising above the hillside town. Commonly referred as ‘the blue city’, Chefchaouen offers stunning, maze-like streets to explore. You'll enjoy time at the compact Medina area, which clings to the northern hillside. At the bottom, you will find the Plaza Outa el Hammam, home to many great restaurants, cafes and several shops.

Overnight: Riad Dar Mounir or similar, Chefchaouen
Meals included: Breakfast

This morning, spend some free time in the Blue City of Chefchaouen.

Continue your journey to Fez, on the way you will take a short detour to explore the Roman ruins at Volubilis, a UNESCO World Heritage site which was once one of the most remote parts of the Roman Empire. The Romans ruled for about 200 years and its estimated they left the region in 285 AD when the empire grew too large to control. Today, the ruins of Volubilis are home to Morocco’s best-preserved Roman ruins, including large merchant homes, temples and many colourful mosaics. Enjoy a guided tour of the massive complex.

Upon arrival in Fez, check into the beautiful riad.

Please note: If you would like to dine at the Riad, please let the tour leader know in advance.

Overnight: Riad Amor or similar, Fez
Meals included: Breakfast

Today, explore the city and medieval Medina on a guided city tour.

Fez is the oldest of Morocco’s Imperial Cities - and arguably the most interesting to explore. The city has the most complete Medina in the Arab world and is also a World Heritage site. With your local guide, spend the morning exploring the Medina - visit Medersas (Arabic for an educational institution), and spend some time outside of the Medina walls. The visit includes Fez el Bali, Souks, Tanneries Chouara, The Al-Qarawiyyin Mosque and University, the Medersa Bou Inania, Bab Boujeloud gate, and a tour of a local Ceramics and Tilework Collective.

Overnight: Riad Amor or similar, Fez
Meals included: Breakfast

Prepare for an early start today - you’ll be covering a lot of ground as you head over the Middle Atlas. Keep an eye out as you travel through the cedar forest, as there’s a possibility to see wild monkeys, as well as mountain lakes and Berber villages. Break the journey in Beni Mellal, where you will see the beautiful Ain Asserdoun gardens and water spring. As you head into the southern Marrakech region, stop in multiple towns before arriving in vibrant Marrakech.

Upon arrival in the city, check into the hotel. Spend the remainder of the day at leisure or perhaps visit the town-square.

In the early evening, Djemaa EL Fna (town-square and market place) comes alive with a sea of musicians, performers, snake charmers, food stalls and more. If you would prefer to enjoy from a distance, there are many cafes surrounding the square where you can sit and enjoy the spectacle with a meal (not included). Marrakech has always been a bustling city, filled with foreign sights, sounds, and smells. Nicknamed ‘the red city’ for the natural red ochre pigment in the walls, it holds the honour as Morocco’s second-largest city.

Overnight: Riad Pachavana or similar, Marrakech
Meals included: Breakfast

After breakfast, enjoy a guided tour of this beautiful city.

Marrakech was founded by Youssef Ben Tachfine around 1070 under the Almoravid dynasty. Unlike Fez, Marrakech has Berber rather than Arab roots and history. It was once an important trading capital for tribes of the Atlas mountains. On your guided tour you will visit the old medina, the Koutoubia minaret, the famous Saadian Tombs, the Souks, Djemaa El Fna and the palace of the Bahia.

Spend time at leisure this afternoon or take the chance to visit the Majorelle Gardens (entrance not included). Not far from the hustle and bustle of the medina, you can wander these lush, expansive gardens filled with sub-tropical plants, bamboo, lilies, and palms. It’s a perfect place to escape the afternoon heat for a more relaxing experience.

Overnight: Riad Pachavana or similar, Marrakech
Meals included: Breakfast

After breakfast this morning, depart for Casablanca - the modern, commercial capital of Morocco. An afternoon may be all you need for a quick tour of the city’s highlights; see The Hassan II mosque (entrance not included) and Hobos, Casablanca’s ‘New Medina’ built by the French in the 1930s. It’s a pleasant place to seek out crafts and houses an olive, vegetable and spice market.

Take a leisurely stroll along the Boulevard de la Corniche, the Beach Promenade, which is often referred to as Morocco’s answer to Miami. Follow the footsteps of Ingrid Bergman and Humphrey Bogart by visiting Rick’s Café, which recreates the famous scene in the legendary film ‘Casablanca’.

Overnight: Hotel Les Saisons or similar, Casablanca
Meals included: Breakfast

Today you will be transferred to Casablanca airport for your flight to Amman, Jordan.

Please note: if your flight departs early, breakfast will be arranged for pick up from the hotel reception the night before.

Upon arrival in Amman, be met and transferred to your hotel.

Overnight: Amman Days Inn or similar, Amman
Meals included: Breakfast

After breakfast, set out to visit the beautifully preserved cities of Jerash; a Greco-Roman city with cardo arches, theatres and Roman churches. Enjoy a visit to the impressive Ajloun Castle, a 12th-century Muslim castle. Afterwards, return back to Amman and enjoy dinner at the hotel.

Overnight: Amman Days Inn or similar, Amman
Meals included: Breakfast;Dinner

Today, travel to Madaba to see a beautiful mosaic map of the Holy Land in the Greek Orthodox church of St George. Then, continue to the biblical site of Mt Nebo, which overlooks the Jordan Valley and the Dead Sea. Mount Nebo is where Moses was granted a view of the Promised Land. Afterwards, stop in Al-Karak, known in the Kingdom of Jerusalem as ‘Kerak’. Visit the 12th century Crusader/Kerak Castle on an urban hilltop. The Kerak Castle was designed to provide a watchful eye (and iron fist) over the traders and travellers crossing the lands between the Dead Sea, Damascus, Egypt, and Mecca.

Afterwards, continue to Petra for the night.

Overnight: Grand View Hotel or similar, Petra
Meals included: Breakfast;Dinner

Today, visit the incredible city of Petra. Inhabited since prehistoric times, this Nabataean caravan-city, situated between the Red and the Dead Sea, was an important crossroads between Arabia, Egypt and Syria-Phoenicia. Petra is half-built, half-carved into rock, and surrounded by mountains riddled with passages and gorges. It’s one of the world's most famous archaeological sites, where ancient Eastern traditions blend with Hellenistic architecture. Enjoy a tour of the magnificent site. Travel along the Siq, the main entrance which is a natural passage between two mountains, leading to the Treasury, the most elaborate temple in Petra.

In the afternoon drive towards the Wadi Rum Desert, a protected desert wilderness in southern Jordan. It features dramatic sandstone mountains including the many-domed Jebel Um Ishrin, and natural arches such as Burdah Rock Bridge. Many prehistoric inscriptions and carvings line rocky caverns and steep chasms, such as Khazali Canyon. Tonight you will spend the night in a Bedouin-style glamping desert camp (includes private facilities), where you will enjoy dinner under the stars.

Overnight: Wadi Rum Hillawi Desert Camp or similar, Wadi Rum
Meals included: Breakfast;Dinner

After breakfast this morning, enjoy a two-hour jeep tour to see the gorgeous red mountains and sand dunes.

Following the tour, travel to Aqaba, a seaside resort town often called the ‘jewel of the Red Sea’. Inhabited since 4000 B.C, it's home to the Islamic-era Aqaba Fort and Aqaba Archaeological Museum. Its beach resorts are popular for windsurfing and other water sports.

Overnight: Golden Tulip Hotel or similar, Aqaba
Meals included: Breakfast;Dinner

Today, head to the Dead Sea for a day at leisure. The Dead Sea is a salt lake located more than 400m below sea level, the lowest point on dry land. Its famously hypersaline water makes floating easy, and its mineral-rich black mud is used for therapeutic and cosmetic treatments.

Overnight: Ramada Resort Dead Sea or similar, Dead Sea
Meals included: Breakfast;Dinner

After breakfast, head to Amman and enjoy a city tour with a local guide.

Visit the Amman Citadel (entrance included), a historical site on a hilltop in downtown Amman. With temples, churches and the Umayyad Palace, the citadel is a large palatial complex from the Umayyad period. From a small, ruined Byzantine church, dating from the fifth or sixth century, to the large Umayyad Mosque and the huge Umayyad Palace complex the Amman Citadel provides spectacular views.

Enjoy the rest of the day at leisure.

Overnight: Amman Days Inn or similar, Amman
Meals included: Breakfast;Dinner

After breakfast, you will be transferred to the airport for your flight to Istanbul, Turkey.

Please note: if your flight departs early, breakfast will be arranged for pick up from the hotel reception the night before.

Upon arrival, be met and transferred to the hotel. Enjoy the remainder of the day at leisure.

Overnight: Ramada Hotel Golden Horn or similar, Istanbul
Meals included: Breakfast;Dinner

Following breakfast this morning, you will be picked up from the hotel for a day tour of old Istanbul. Visit Topkapi Palace, the great palace of Ottoman sultans from the 15th to the 19th centuries, which houses an exquisite collection of crystal, silver and Chinese porcelain. Robes worn by the sultans and their families, the famous jewels of the Imperial Treasury, miniatures, the Holy Mantle, and enshrining relics of the Prophet Mohammed are also featured.

Next, you will see Sultan Ahmet Imperial Mosque, built in the 16th century by the architect Mehmet. It is perhaps more commonly known as the Blue Mosque, due to its magnificent interior decoration of blue Iznik tiles. Afterwards, you will see the ancient Hippodrome, the scene of chariot races, with the three monuments; the Obelisk of Theodosius, the bronze Serpentine Column and the Column of Constantine. Afterwards, stroll around the Grand Spice Bazaar for shopping. The air here is filled with the enticing aromas of cinnamon, caraway, saffron, mint, thyme and every other conceivable herb and spice. This evening you have the opportunity to join an optional Bosphorus dinner cruise including traditional Turkish entertainment and dinner. (not included).

Optional activity: Bosphorus Dinner Cruise - $90 NZD

TOUR GUIDE VS. TOUR LEADER
Tour Guide:
Often locals with intimate knowledge of an area, its culture, and history. Their role entails providing commentary, routing the tour, and seeing that people have a good time. They are a licensed, qualified expert who supplies specific information on history, art, architecture and culture of the city/village/attraction in which he or she is guiding the tour. The guide meets the group at the required place and leaves the group at the end of the tour, they do not travel with the group.

Tour Leader:
An experienced person tasked with ensuring the smooth operation of tours, as well as providing practical support to passengers throughout the whole trip. Their role primarily includes assisting with accommodation, transportation between locations, and communication with tour guides in each stop. A tour leader may provide general guidance around a city or village, and offer information on the place visited on the bus, however they are not required to have specific knowledge on art, architecture, or history. They are not allowed to provide a guided tour or commentary of a city/village/attraction once there and if caught doing so, can be fined.

Please note: Tour leaders/guides are not a standard inclusion in all travel offers. Tour leaders/guides will only be made available when particularly required to enhance the experience of the destination featured.

CLIMATE & AVERAGE TEMPERATURES
Morocco:
Morocco's climate is very diverse, varying with the season and region. The country is mostly dry with high temperatures in summer (June - August) and a cooler climate in the mountains. In spring and Autumn (September - November and March - May), the cities are warm to hot (maximum daytime temperatures around 25 - 30°C) with pleasantly cool nights. In the desert, the sun is strong and the nights can be cold. In the mountains, the air is cool and nights are cold. In winter January and February the temperature goes from 20°C in the daytime to 9°C at night.

Jordan:
For ideal sightseeing conditions, the best time to visit Jordan is during the spring (March - May) and autumn (September to November) months. At these times of the year, the temperatures are cool enough to spend your days exploring Jordan's iconic sites.

Turkey:
Istanbul
Temperatures in May/June and September/October are between 22 and 30°C. January/December has an average temperature of around 15°C.

Kusadasi
There are two main seasons in Kusadasi: the cold season and hot season, which basically correlate with winter and summer in other parts of Europe. The shoulder seasons, autumn and spring, experience weather patterns that are a mix of both the cold and warm seasons.
