Overview

Get swept up in Egyptian legend as you venture to ancient temples, pyramids and tombs on this epic cultural odyssey through Egypt and the Nile.

Over 18 days, become a student again, taking in the past and present-day Egypt as you tour through Cairo, Siwa Oasis, Aswan, Luxor and more. Surrender to the majesty of the Great Pyramid of Giza, the only survivor of the Seven Great Wonders of the Ancient World, and the mighty Great Sphinx in Cairo in the first of many pinch-me moments. After exploring the incredible antiquities of Alexandria, embark on a safari through the desert to the mirage-like Siwa Oasis. By day, swim in Siwa’s turquoise salt-water lakes and Cleopatra’s Pool, a purported gift from Marc Anthony himself, and by night unwind in the comfort of a plush Ecolodge.

Next, embark on a panoramic cruise down the Nile River, setting sail to mysterious temples in Kom Ombo and Edfu. Cruise in style, enjoying a Galabeya Party in traditional dress, plus an Egyptian folk dance performance while on board. In Luxor, take a horse and carriage ride to the Temple of Horus and explore the Valley of the Kings, a royal tomb known as the ‘Gateway to the Afterlife’. Once you’ve had your fill of ancient history, unwind for three nights at an all-inclusive resort in the coastal town of Hurghada on the Red Sea. Reflect on your journey while soaking up the sunshine, or take up optional windsurfing, snorkelling or a boat trip to the untouched Giftun Islands nearby.

Teeming with treasures almost too good to be true, there’s no telling what else you’ll discover on this unmissable journey featuring return international flights, 12 nights 4-star accommodation and a 3-night 4-5-star cruise down the Nile. After breakfast, join your Egyptologist guide for a visit to the enigmatic Sphinx and Pyramids of Giza. At 500 feet high and 750 feet wide at its base, the Great Pyramid of Khufu (Cheops) is the only survivor of the Seven Great Wonders of the ancient world; it is a breathtaking structure built from enormous stone blocks with a white limestone covering. Along with the smaller pyramids, the sight of these huge structures is unforgettable.

Next, visit the pyramid of Chephren. The best preserved of the three main Giza Pyramids, the top part still retains the original facing of smoothly-finished stone, giving an idea of how the pyramids would originally have appeared. Beside the pyramid of Chephren, you will see the Great Sphinx, carved out of a natural rocky outcrop. The lion's body stretches 45 metres.

Afterwards continue to the pyramid of Mycerinus, the smallest of the three pyramids and partly dressed with pink granite slabs. Following the tour of the pyramids, you will visit Memphis, one of the most important cities in Egypt. From the 3rd millennium BC, this 'City of the Dead’ was the capital of ancient Egypt when King Menes unified upper and lower Egypt. Then continue visiting the Pyramids of King Zoser in Saqqara. It was the first real pyramid to be constructed in ancient Egypt; it is the most ancient surviving monument and the oldest stone building in history.

The building is rectangular with a large rotunda on the ground floor containing massive exhibitions.

Afterwards proceed to visit the massive mediaeval Salah El-din citadel, a mediaeval Islamic-era fortification in Cairo against the Crusaders. Explore this ancient fortress and marvel at its brilliant domed ceilings, suspended lights, and commanding views of Cairo. The citadel houses the Alabaster mosque of Muhammad Ali.

Afterwards, drive to Old Cairo and visit the Coptic Cairo, a part of Old Cairo which encompasses the Babylon Fortress, the Hanging Church, The Greek Church of St. George and many other Coptic churches and historical sites. Day 5 Cairo - Siwa Oasis

Today starts your safari desert experience (approximately 700km) where your Egyptologist guide will escort you to Siwa Oasis via the El-Alamein Road.

Siwa Oasis is one of Egypt's best western desert oases with its thousands of palm trees and gorgeous hot springs.

Upon arrival visit what has become known as Alexander the Great's spectacular Temple of The Oracle. Previously the famous Temple of Amun, the Temple of the Oracle was renamed after his visit to consult the famous oracle during Alexander's Egyptian conquest. Continue on to The Mountain of the Dead (Jabal el Mawta) to see various archaeological monuments and countless ancient tombs.

The Mountain of the Dead contains thousands of graves cut in the bedrock, where inscriptions help date the oldest graves for researchers and scholars. Next, visit spectacular organic shapes of 13th-century mud-brick Shali Fortress, the old city and castle in the heart of the Siwa Oasis. Built from kershef (chunks of salt from the lake just outside town, mixed with rock and plastered in local clay), the labyrinth of huddled buildings was originally four or five storeys high and housed hundreds of people.

In the late afternoon, check in to your Hotel for a magical sunset view over the desert.

This evening you'll enjoy a traditional dinner at a nearby restaurant.

Overnight: Ghaliet Ecolodge Siwa Hotel or similar, Siwa

Day 6 Cleopatra’s Pool & Salt Lakes

After breakfast, enjoy relaxing and swimming at the famous Cleopatra pool, a natural bubbling spring, one of many found throughout the oasis, although this is the most well-known of them all.

Enjoy a dip in a cold or hot natural pool that has refreshed many a traveller for thousands of years. Discover the desert's famous Salt lakes, the largest of which have a depth of about 4m and 95% salt concentration. The clear blue hyper-saline water of Siwa Salt Lake makes it perfect for a relaxing float, and has been found to be therapeutically beneficial for many ailments.

This evening enjoy a traditional dinner at a restaurant, or alternatively take the opportunity to enjoy a desert safari (optional).

Optional Tour: 4x4 Safari - $140 AUD per person

TOUR GUIDE VS. TOUR LEADER

Tour Guide:

Often locals with intimate knowledge of an area, its culture, and history. Their role entails providing commentary, routing the tour, and seeing that people have a good time. They are a licensed, qualified expert who supplies specific information on the history, art, architecture and culture of the city/village/attraction where they are guiding the tour. The guide meets the group at the required place and leaves it at the end of the tour; they do not travel with the group.

Their role primarily includes assisting with accommodation, transportation between locations, and communication with tour guides at each stop. However, they are not required to have specific art, architecture, or historical knowledge. They are not allowed to provide a guided tour or commentary of a city/village/attraction once there and, if caught doing so, can be fined.

Gratuities (tips) are not included in the tour price for services of the guide, ship crew, hotel porters and drivers.

Please note: In Egypt this amount is mandatory and will be collected at the beginning of your tour for the number of days on tour in Egypt at $10 USD per person, per day.

Sightseeing:

Please note: If entrance to a site is affected by changes in operating hours or public holiday closures, your itinerary, where possible, may be adjusted, or a similar activity will be offered in its place (subject to availability).

Shopping:

Shopping overseas can be a daunting and confusing experience, especially when there is a language barrier. Please be very cautious when foreign currencies and prices are involved. If paying by credit card, please pay close attention to the amount you are being charged and keep all your receipts.

Do not make any purchases you are not comfortable with or feel pressured into. If you are uncertain or need assistance with the language barrier, please seek assistance from your Tour Guide/Leader.

Please refer to our Terms and Conditions regarding shopping for further information.

Visas

A tourist visa is a strict requirement when travelling to Egypt on an Australian passport. The tourist visa is available for purchase upon arrival.

Important:

Visa rules may have changed since Covid-19.

Some countries and airlines may require you to obtain an additional visa before arrival. Please check with the nearest embassy, consulate or immigration department of the destination you're entering.

Please note: Passengers who are not Australian citizens must also check with the respective consulate or visa agency to determine what their visa requirements are and what personal identification is required.

It is also important to note that some areas of employment, such as journalism, government authorities and charity organisations, may have additional restrictions in applying for Visas. This may, in turn, affect the type of application required.

Travel insurance

Embarking on your next trip is exciting, and while you hope the unexpected does not happen, it is best to be prepared. We strongly recommend you take out travel insurance when making your booking. Whether it’s a potential medical emergency, a flight cancellation, a delayed suitcase, or an unforeseen event, it's important to ensure you're adequately protected. Supplier Fees

In the event the Travel Offer you have purchased is unable to proceed, and/or a travel Supplier is unable to fulfil the Travel Offer due to external circumstances (Limitation of Liability e.g. a Force Majeure event), there may be a fee or amount of money that is withheld by our Suppliers and is unrecoverable. This may be due to non-refundable airline tickets, cancellation penalties with cruise cabins or unrecoverable payments with our land/accommodation partners. TripADeal has committed to these costs as your Agent and will endeavour to recover all funds committed and/or paid for your Travel Offer, but this may not be possible in all circumstances. If refunds are unavailable from Suppliers, we will endeavour to obtain a travel credit on the best terms available and communicate these outcomes to you. If TripADeal cannot obtain a refund or travel service credit, or part thereof, this cost is passed on to the customer as a Supplier Fee. This fee is not revenue-raising and is paid to or withheld by our suppliers when recovering payments.
