The Bagotville Air Defence Museum (entrance not included, additional charges apply) presents a more military experience with bilingual interpretation panels narrating the history of the Royal Canadian Air Force.

When it comes to food, the imagination of the Québécois knows no bounds. There is a proud tradition of culinary crafts producing artisan beer, wine and ice cider as well as delicious hand-crafted cheese and jam. Seafood is also very important so look for the blue fork symbol in shops and restaurants which identifies locally sourced sea produce. The traditional cuisine of Quebec fits the winter climate, consisting of French-influenced hearty and warming dishes. Tourtière and cipaille are special deep-filled meat pies that make for delicious comfort food. Fèves au lard (baked beans with fat bacon) is a welcome feast for those on a meagre budget while sugar pies are a delicious dessert with a sauce made almost purely from sugar. While these calorific dishes may not be part of the daily menu today, they are still served to perpetuate the memory of the country’s culinary past.

Day 45 Quebec, Canada

(Docked overnight)

Sailing into Quebec City, you'll arrive at the oldest inland port in Canada so why not head inland to explore the magically quaint Old Town's unique history and romance? The only fortified city in North America, Old Quebec is a true one-off as the architecture is thoroughly European and remains untouched by time. The district is best explored on foot and the cliff-top location is a perfect vantage point to view the distinctive cityscape which spans 300 years.

Wander up Rue Saint-Paul where a host of one-of-a-kind galleries and some tempting antique shops will lure you in. The magnificent period buildings are an attraction in themselves and look magical in the winter when covered in snow. When you need refreshment, there are plenty of bistros and cosy cafés to rest and refuel. This is especially necessary if you decide to climb the 59 ‘Breakneck Stairs’ which links the upper and lower town. For a less strenuous trip to the top, take the funicular (not included, additional charges apply) which takes you to the Petit Champlain quarter.

You also can't miss the remarkable trompe-l’oeil murals on the walls of Soumande House near the Palace Royale which depict the history and characters of the city. The frescoes are relatively modern and breathtaking in their detail, they're also so lifelike that you will believe people are waving to you from open windows, but it is all a trick of the eye.

Overnight: Cunard ‘Queen Mary 2’

Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 46 Quebec, Canada

The St Lawrence River is a huge presence cutting right through this city although nearby you'll find the Aquarium du Quebec which is a watery playground for more than 300 different species of animals, fish and reptiles (entrance not included, additional charges apply). The huge site spans 16 hectares and is a fabulous way to view the indigenous species of the ocean and river. You'll find polar bears, walruses and seals frolicking in the outdoor park to enchant you with their antics. In the 350,000-litre tanks, you'll spot seahorses, rays, jellyfish and other exotic species that will intrigue you from this natural environment. It is like diving into the Pacific without getting wet!

When you're hungry, you'll find plenty of traditional sweet treats in Quebec City such as the ‘Poor Man’s Pudding’ which is a delicious cake, served warm and topped with a sticky, syrupy sauce. To complete your sugar rush sugar pie is a single-crust open tart filled with creamy sweet custard that's sometimes flavoured with maple syrup.

Day 48 Corner Brook, Newfoundland Canada

Surveyed by Captain James Cook in 1767, Corner Brook is an island on the west coast of Newfoundland, separating the St Lawrence River from the Atlantic Ocean to form the stunning Gulf of St Lawrence. Corner Brook is set against the impressive backdrop of the Long Range Mountains which form the northernmost section of the Appalachian Mountains.

This larger-than-life scenery creates a dramatic first impression when you arrive by ship, especially during the final stage that takes you around 20 miles through the Bay of Islands, a freshwater fjord towards the mouth of the Humber River. The jagged slopes and thick forest are scenic at any time of year, although autumn can be the most eye-catching when many of the leaves turn red, orange and copper.

The natural setting takes centre stage in this corner of Canada and there are many walking trails around Corner Brook as well as opportunities for zip lining and river rafting for the more adventurous. Some of the most spectacular scenery is found in Gros Morne National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its varied terrain includes tundra, forest, bogs, salt marshes, waterfalls and a freshwater fjord. The most fascinating spot of all is the area known as the Tablelands where tectonic plates collided millions of years ago, forcing part of the earth’s mantle to the surface and creating a geologically-intriguing landscape that's scattered with ancient rocks.

Overnight: Cunard ‘Queen Mary 2’

Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 49 Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada

Off the east coast of Canada lies a group of large islands that makes up the region of Nova Scotia where you'll find the historic port of Sydney and Canada’s ocean gateway to Cape Breton Island. The stunning coastline and panoramic vistas will make you gasp at their magnificence but for those who enjoy a more urban experience, the city itself will not disappoint.

When you disembark at the port, prepare to stand back in amazement as you're confronted by the world’s largest fiddle, ‘Fidheal Mhor A’ Ceilidh’. Make sure you have your camera ready for a photo with this giant icon before you begin your onshore adventure. The fiddle carries two messages, a reminder of the cultural concerts and performances held regularly in the Joan Harris Cruise Pavilion where it stands over 50 feet high as a nod to the Celtic ancestry of the area.

For a more in-depth experience of the local culture, you could walk around the colonial town of Old Sydney where you'll find intriguing sites including St Patrick’s which is the oldest Roman Catholic Church in Cape Breton, Cossit House that was built in 1787, and Jost House which is also built in the 18th century. While walking from site to site, you'll also find homemade refreshments in the local cafés which make for a welcome pit stop.

Other important information

TOUR GUIDE VS. TOUR LEADER
Tour Guide
Often locals with intimate knowledge of an area, its culture, and history. Their role entails providing commentary, routing the tour, and seeing that people have a good time. They are a licensed, qualified expert who supplies specific information on the history, art, architecture and culture of the city/village/attraction where they are guiding the tour. The guide meets the group at the required place and leaves it at the end of the tour; they do not travel with the group.

Tour Leader
An experienced person tasked with ensuring the smooth operation of tours, as well as providing practical support to passengers throughout the whole trip. Their role primarily includes assisting with accommodation, transportation between locations, and communication with tour guides at each stop. A tour leader may provide general guidance around a city or village and offer information on the place visited on the bus. However, they are not required to have specific art, architecture, or historical knowledge. They are not allowed to provide a guided tour or commentary of a city/village/attraction once there and, if caught doing so, can be fined.
Please note: Tour leaders/guides are not a standard inclusion in all travel offers. Tour leaders/guides will only be made available when required to enhance the experience of the destination featured.

If you arrive in Canada by train, bus, or boat, you don’t need a visa or eTA, but you do need to bring the right travel documents.

Europe
A tourist visa is not required for Europe for stays up to 90 days if travelling on an Australian passport.

United Kingdom
A tourist visa is not required for Europe for stays up to 6 months if travelling on an Australian passport.

Important:
• Please start arranging your visa three weeks before departure to account for any delays due to consulate operating hours.
• Visa rules may have changed since Covid-19. Some countries and airlines may require you to obtain an additional visa before arrival. Please check with the nearest embassy, consulate or immigration department of the destination you're entering.
Please note:
• Passengers who are not Australian citizens must also check with the respective consulate or visa agency to determine what their visa requirements are and what personal identification is required.
• It is also important to note that some areas of employment, such as journalism, government authorities and charity organisations, may have additional restrictions in applying for visas. This may, in turn, affect the type of application required.
